Trevor Paglen: The Last Pictures

The most enduring relics of human civilization to this date are not cave paintings or pyramids, but the satellites launched out of Earth’s atmosphere. Long after terrestrial cataclysm, these communication devices have the potential to survive billions of years beyond direct use by man.

Much like Carl Sagan’s Golden Record, launched with the space shuttle Voyager in the 1970s, The Last Pictures is both a time capsule as well as a message in a bottle challenging the boundaries of human time scale. Trevor Paglen, in partnership with MIT, has compiled a collection of 100 images representing modern human history, etched onto an archival golden disc attached to the Echostar XVI satellite, to be launched into space this Fall.

In case you don’t have any upcoming space travel plans to view the gallery, The Last Pictures is available as a book co-published by UC Press and Creative Time Books. Also, residents of NYC are welcome to join Trevor Paglen, Werner Herzog, and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Tracy K. Smith for an evening conversation under the stars about cultural legacy and space exploration, tonight, September 19.

For more information about this evening’s event in Bryant Park, as well as additional dates for the event series in other cities, visit creativetime.org.
